We R The Lost are a collective hip hop/spoken word effort mostly out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin with rapper and producer Jon Briggz at the core. The group started out as an apparently haphazard band of party-focused rap artists who quickly gained a reputation as such from both fans and detractors. Briggz wanted to tell the real story of the group, and so began the unintentional social movement that is We R the Lost.
Still Lost is We R the Lost’s second full-length album. With Briggz’s presence on each track the only common denominator, the group works with every possible genre and sub-genre, every style and timbre of hip hop imaginable. A definite highlight is the opening track, “I’m Spotted.” With jazzy chill beat a’la Digable Planets, Briggz’s vocals on “I’m Spotted” are equally jazzy, warm, and done in a sort of on-beat spoken word style. His vocal style could be equated somewhat to early Nas but with a brighter timbre.
“I’m Spotted, ” produced by DelleRideOut, should not be taken as representative of Briggz’s and The Lost’s only style; Still Lost runs the gamut, but the other consistent element is the production quality and the passion with which Briggz and his compatriots create their work. Still Lost, available on itunes for purchase or on Briggz’s Soundcloud to stream (short clips), is as varied as can be and as interesting as anything released in underground hiphop in the last decade.
