Your first obsession of 2016 has arrived. London-based electro-pop duo Taffy Trouble, comprised of longtime friends Alex and Ella, is the latest act that you’re gonna wanna know before anyone else. Their Facebook lists John Waters and Lil Kim as their influences and that should be enough to perk up your ears.
The duo self-describes as “an adopted alter ego, a Prophet of trash and a Messiah of bad taste.” Brilliant.
Their formal introduction “Backseat Driver” is officially on SoundCloud for those who want a kick of obnoxiously effervescent brat pop written and co-produced by the duo with a little help from Neil Comber, a rising producer’s that’s worked with the likes of M.I.A. and Django Django. The song’s a sweet concoction of outfitted in a cheerleader uniform popping bubblegum with a dark streak for getting into trouble on Friday nights. It sounds like Charli XCX dancing with the PC Music gang. Most of all, the duo sounds confident in their cheeky infectious pop, and that attitude is exactly what takes the song all the way.
The duo’s next step is working with Dimitri Tikovoï, who’s co-written and produced the bulk of Nicola Robert’s critically acclaimed debut album, for their debut EP due later this year. With that kind of weapon at their arsenal, coupled with the magic we’ve already been seen, we expect their upcoming work to be nothing less than the same sugar-high-served-with-a-wink we’ve already tasted.
