Toronto duo Moon King have released two singles in advance of their North American debut LP, Secret Life. Moon King are a duo comprised of producer Daniel Benjamin and vocalist and colaborator Maddy Wilde. The two have been linked to other Canadian artists such as Majical Cloudz and Grimes, but they decided to join forces late last year and start putting out some very different indie electronica under the Moon King name.
“Roswell” is the first single that was released from Secret Life about a month ago. It’s difficult to describe Moon King’s sound as it is so new and different, but if any influences come into play in “Roswell, ” the most noticeable would be the slight nod to Flock of Seagulls and other 80s new wave groups. There is a heavy guitar in this track however, so not everything is new wave. The vocals are also unique, and have sort of a brassy, almost banshee-like timbre which offsets the rich dream pop atmosphere of the backing track.

“Apocalypse” was released just a few days ago, and while many would say it doesn’t sound like anything ever written in music, it does bear some resemblance to a very obscure band from the 90s called The Faith Healers UK, but only slightly. Once again, even though Moon King are largely electronic a strong guitar makes its presence known in “Apocalypse.” In this track the vocals are a little more tempered and harmonic, a bit like Billy Corgan but with less raspiness.
Secret Life will be released in full in April 2015 via Last Gang Records. The album is available for pre-order either as a limited edition vinyl record or as both an mp3 download and vinyl. Those who pre-order the album will receive a free immediate download of “Roswell.” Fans who would like to check out more Moon King before this North American Release can find their European album, Obsession on vinyl via the Tough Love Records website, and there are a few videos from the previous album on YouTube. The new singles as well as the previous album are available to stream on Moon King’s Soundcloud page.
