They say less is more, but sometimes ‘less’ involves a ten-piece men’s choir. Calling on the collective choral stylings of Birkelunden Mannskor, APOTHEK reveal a stunning live take on new single ‘Reunion’. Recorded at Propeller Music Division in Oslo, the track is taken back to its more organic roots, with piano in place of layered synth-and-sighs.
We quite quickly landed on the idea of using a choir because the original has a lot of vocal samples and parts in it, ” explains producer Nils Martin Larsen. “We thought Birkelunden Mannskor would bring a different energy to the track, and they wanted to try something a bit different than what they usually do. We had a beer, sang it through a few times and the result is shot by Simen Skari.
Despite any grandiose delusions that come with full choir backing, ‘Reunion’ is delivered with refreshing humility. Existential – “it’s about trying to get where you have to go and reaching conclusions you are unable to reach, ” according to vocalist Morten Myklebust.
‘Reunion’ is out now via Propeller Recordings – taken from Apothek’s forthcoming debut album, released 2016.
