Formerly the frontwoman of beloved indie pop band The Pipettes, Gwenno released last year’s Y Dydd Olaf, a blissful kraut-pop political concept album inspired by Owain Owain’s 1976 dystopian novel of the same name, to critical acclaim. Pitchfork claimed that the LP’s “beguiling melodies and execution also make it one of the best British debuts of 2015, ” and Under the Radar hailed it as “one of the most unique, curious, and downright fun albums of 2015.” This firestorm of critical support led her to win last year’s Welsh Music Prize against intense competition.
