Portland-based band Candace crafts dreamy, carefree tracks melding shoegaze, indie rock, and lo-fi. Formerly known as Is/Is, the trio composed of Sarah Rose (guitar/bass/vocals), Sarah Nienaber (guitar/bass/vocals), and Mara Appel DesLauriers (drums/vocals) relocated from Minnesota to Oregon to put their band as first priority. Candace has released three full LPs, most recently being New Future in 2016.
Even after completing New Future, Rose, Nienaber, and DesLauriers have remained proactive in writing and recording. To close out 2016, Candace and long-time collaborator Neil Weir from Flat Black Studios sought peace in the countryside in the form of a barn in Iowa City. During the time, they tracked, ate, slept, repeated the process, and wrapped up songs to send off for mixing. The outcomes of the retreat will be released as a 7” called “Horizons b/w Greys” out November 24, 2017 as well as an LP titled New Ruins out in 2018.
The band recently shared their song and video “Horizons” off of their 7.” Rose, Nienaber, and DesLauriers soothingly sing in unison and instrumentalize with the honesty of Americana and expansiveness of shoegaze. “Horizons” has slower tempo than songs on their last release, alluding to drives in the countryside when there’s no rush, no traffic, and no clouds in the sky.
Candace will spend the remainder of November journeying across the West Coast to support their upcoming releases. Catch Candace in Los Angeles on November 20th, 2017 at Harvard & Stone.
