In anticipation of Saro’s “Boy Afraid” EP release this Friday, December 15th,, here is a first look into Saro’s musical process, what inspired him to get into music, and what we should look forward to with Saro in 2018:
Sarah Woods: With all the recent acclaim and awards for your debut as an artist and upcoming second EP release, do you have any big plans for the coming year as a solo artist?
Saro: Early 2018 my visual that accompanies Boy Afraid will be coming out. Then I think I’m going to sneak into the woods somewhere to write and record my debut album!
Sarah Woods: Who would you say is your biggest musical influence that has made the biggest impact on your style?
Saro: Morrissey is a huge lyrical inspiration of mine. Lately I’ve been getting inspired by Björk’s vocal approach and melodies, and the production style of Boards of Canada & Tim Hecker.
Sarah Woods: While on tour this year, have you had any moments of great inspiration for new music we should expect this next year? Any unexpected moments on tour that have shaped you and would like to share with your fans?
Saro: There was a night in NYC before my show at Northside Festival when I saw the Dirty Projectors and was insanely inspired by their live arrangements. Every sound was being played live or at least triggered live. I want to move my show in that direction. On tour, meeting artists whom I really look up to and realizing how humble and hardworking they are. I think those are the moments that shaped me most.
Sarah Woods: You have spoken before of the death of your close friend impacting your life and music tremendously. How has this experience shaped your approach to the musical process?
Saro: Yeah although the wound isn’t fresh it has definitely changed me. I think I have become a more vulnerable lyricist because I had to write myself through the grieving process.
Sarah Woods: Do you have a special message for your fans, whether about your new EP or about your plans for 2018?
Saro: I love you and I can’t wait for you to hear and see what’s coming next year <3
