“Hi, my name’s Gordi and I’m from Sydney”. The musical artist, Sophie Payton goes by the moniker “Gordi” and just in case you’re curious, Gordi was Sophie’s brother’s nickname. While her musical name is basic, her music is definitely not. On Monday night, Gordi played at the Barboza in and it was her first show ever in Seattle. There’s an attractive mix of confidence and musicality to her performance, she has a lot of stage presence. She plays keyboards and guitar and uses two microphones. One is just a normal mic and the other creates that “tinny telephone” sound ala “Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster the People. Gordi also creates sound FX loops with looper pedals — this gives her music layers and enhances her vocals during the performance.

Gordi played some of her old songs and a few from her new album, Reservoir which will be released next week. Her music is original and her talent is undeniably very good. She can connect with her live audience and her stories are interesting. It was a pretty tame crowd, some Seattleites and some of her friends from Australia. The one thing that was prevalent is that everyone wanted to be part of her music — it’s just not known, yet. And YET should be capitalized because, like Halsey and Bon Iver, Gordi will be very known, very soon.

Her show is a little over an hour and she doesn’t play any “cover” songs — all the music she plays is her own and that’s admirable. Then she can’t get “pegged” into any genre. However, while not playing any covers is fine — sometimes it’s nice so the audience can be part of the performance and it allows them to participate. It gives them a point of reference, maybe something like Temper Trap’s “Sweet Disposition”.

Gordi is an artist that you’ll want to keep your eye on. Her new album is one that you’ll want to listen to and own. She’s playing smaller venues now, but that won’t last very long.
