The Teragram Ballroom of Downtown Los Angeles, known for housing some of the biggest artists for intimate engagements, was packed with people from all across Southern California for a special evening with renowned singer-songwriter Jamila Woods. As a soul singer and poet, Woods gained her reputation as a rising star in the music community this summer after her performance at Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago, Illinois, where she debuted her first full LP “HEAVN” for all in attendance. “HEAVN” was released this August to much acclaim, featuring strong themes of black woman empowerment, self-care, the city of Chicago, and family. The album also features collaborations with fellow Chicago based artists such as Noname, Saba, and Chance the Rapper. With her success as an empowering and positive solo artist on the steady rise, it was no wonder that the intimate Los Angeles venue this night was filled with unbridled energy until Woods graced the stage.
Jamila Woods entered the stage with a full band ready to bring the groove with her album titled track “HEAVN.” Dressed in sporty chic white track pants, mesh black crop top, white leather Converse, and unique silver hair jewelry, her personal style added a fashion component to the performance that is rarely taken advantage of by many artists nowadays. She continued the night by performing tracks from her new album such as “In My Name” and the newest hit “LSD,” but also treated the crowd to her favorite covers such as the classic “Say My Name.” In the middle of the set, Woods gave a riveting spoken word performance, leaving everyone speechless in the audience. The most special aspect of this night though was the intimate and personal nature of her set. Her soulful tracks made the venue this night feel more like an underground jazz club, the live band bringing new life to her tracks that no studio recording could possibly accomplish. It became obvious that Woods’ ability to connect with her audience is the key to her success and will continue to be in years to come.
Jamila Woods will be performing again in the New Year, so be sure to check her tour schedule and experience the live show magic yourself when she comes to a show near you. Her next performance will be in Sydney, Australia, at The Basement on January 18th, 2018, and soon after will be touring all throughout Europe and performing at various festivals and venues. This is an artist you do not want to miss.
