“PARAD(w/m)E” (i.e. Parade With Me) is the new single from Sylvan Esso, an electronic pop duo whose sophomore album What Now already earned them a Grammy nomination in the Best Dance/Electronic album category. Indeed, it would be very difficult not to jiggle around to this new tune. Yet, do not be fooled. No matter how danceable the beat, “PARAD(w/m)E” is hardly a happy song.

Most people in our modern society just go about their days rarely devoting any thought to the overall being of our world. Tons of plastic drifting in the ocean waters, forests being cleared or elephants mutilated for ivory – these are not typical concerns of an average Mr. Smith. Yet, it doesn’t change the fact that the state of the planet and mankind has been in serious situation for quite some time now and the average Smith bears the responsibility. We all do.

Michael Jackson tried to save the planet with his “Earth Song”, Eddie Vedder criticized the public in “Society”, and now Sylvan Esso felt the responsibility to use their talent for the greater cause as well. The duo released a cleverly ironic anthem the purpose of which is to open our eyes to omnipresent ignorance.

Sweaty, sweaty, wonder why now it’s always summertime (…) | salty, salty, water dried, oceans all gone with the tide | steamy, steamy, bright sunshine, flowers, grass and trees all died…

And what exactly are we doing about this state of affairs? It’s all gone but here we’re gonna stay, the concrete’s all empty so we’re making a parade… P-A-R-A-D with me, there’s nothing left to ruin, we finally got free, how’s that for manifesting our destiny, P-A-R-A-D with me!

We’ve had so much fun lately destroying our home. It is high time we got our priorities straight because as a matter of fact the planet can save itself. However, it is going to be through getting rid of us. Sylvan Esso’s single is a warning and the message is sarcastically clear, our hedonistic lifestyle might be the end of us.
