Helga Arvesten is likely to be one of the breakout indie stars of 2018 with her unique approach to classical vocal style, her clean musical lines and emotive lyrics. “Don’t Speak” is the second in a series of three singles she’s releasing over the course of late 2017 and 2018. Its accompanying video is just as stark, clean, classic and emotive as the song itself.

Arvesten has studied classical and jazz vocals at some of the most prestigious institutions in the world, and it’s always a wonder when such a talent wanders into indie territory. Without even hearing her work, some indie fans might already be conjuring up sounds similar to Kate Bush, Tori Amos or Bjork. These are all fair comparisons, but Arvesten’s music thus far seems much more simple and clean.

“Don’t Speak” is probably the most stark example of the clean, almost angular lines of Arvesten’s composition out of the three singles she plans for this series. Arvesten’s beautiful soprano is the main feature of the track, and she manipulates it in a way which incorporates a lot of complicated structure. Jazz tones, indie timing, even some pop and Scananavian folk can all be heard in her vocals but with all these different styles her voice still rings like a clear, singular bell. So gorgeous and emotive is her voice, in fact, that the listener may forget there’s an entire impeccably composed classical song as background to the vocals, also written by Arvesten.

The video for “Don’t Speak” mirrors the clean lines of the song, with a closeup of Arvesten’s face being the main focus while images of the written vocals flashing intermittently throughout. It drives the point of the lyrics home simply and effectively and is just as beautifully done as the song.

“Don’t Speak” and the first song released in this series, “Naked” don’t seem to be purchaseable yet and are only available in video form, likely until the third song in the series, “Lightning Strike” is released. In the meantime, check out Arvesten’s YouTube channel to watch the “Naked” video. Videos from her previous EP Entering the Ozone are also on the channel, and the EP can be streamed or purchased on Spotify,  iTunes and Amazon. Visit her website for updates on releases.
