Everyone goes through a rough patch sometimes, nobody’s life is perfect. But what if you are chronically overwhelmed and lonely? When, having to constantly face opposition, it feels like it has always been and might always be just yourself against the world?
In times of need, we all naturally turn to our sources of strength. Since you are reading this article right now, chances are that your foundation might be music. Imagine Dragons are no different in this regard. The entirety of their Evolve album, empowering and effusive in its form and content, reflects the band’s passion and love for what they do. “Whatever It Takes”, the newest single, is not only a brilliant song in itself but is also accompanied by a well-thought-out video which symbolically presents the mental state of an emotionally and creatively constraint person.
In the single’s visuals, the band is exposed to all sorts of obstacles of a pretty catastrophic nature. It all starts with wind and earthquake that become more and more unbearable as the small room, where Dan Reynolds and his friends are having a rehearsal, begins to slowly fall apart. Then, the scenery slightly changes, the blustery seismic waves turn to a huge storm and we now see the band struggling to perform the song through all the water flooding the instruments. Very quickly the whole space is sunk and suddenly Imagine Dragons are not only fighting to perform but also to live. If that’s not an obvious metaphor, I don’t know what is.
Being an artist might sometimes feel exactly like drowning. Fighting for every breath you fight for freedom. All the sea monsters and sirens swimming around you envy you your courage to be different and your persistence might confuse them, maybe even frighten them. For who would be crazy enough to stand tall against all odds, withstanding earthquakes and hurricanes? Only the wild hearts have enough strength to be renegades in a world that does not favor nonconformity. Everybody’s hoping they could be the one, I was born to run, I was born for this.
In the video Imagine Dragons show an admirable level of steadfastness as they continue playing their music underwater until the very last breath while Dan Reynolds sings, when I am deceased at least I go down to the grave and die happily. And then… their passion surmounts the flood and bursts out into the literal fire. How you fight for your dreams will define you. Watching the band doing what they love most in those flames of glory will lift every artistic spirit up. It is just how they are, those Dragons – nothing less but inspiring.
Whatever it takes
’cause I love the adrenaline in my veins
I do whatever it takes
’cause I love how it feels when I break the chains
I’m ready for whatever it takes…
